Sermon Series:
The Greatest of All Time
Hebrews 1:1-4
1. Jesus has an exclusive and unmatched authority.
Hebrews 1:1-2 (NIV) “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.”
Hebrews 1:8-9 (NIV) “But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”
Psalm 110:1 “The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”
- Who do you give authority to in your life?
2. Jesus has a unique identity.
Hebrews 1:3 (NIV), “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being…”
John 1:14 “So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”
- Do you know who you are?
Chad Ragsdale- “If we aren’t careful, it is possible to develop a faith that has become disassociated from its object.”
Hebrews 3:1 (NIV) “Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.”
3. Jesus has great power.
Hebrews 1:3-4 (NIV) “Sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.”
Hebrews 1:10-12 (NIV) “In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”
Hebrews 1:13 (NIV) “To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?”
- What will you do with this Jesus?
Colossians 1:15-20 “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.”
