Hearing God’s Voice
Part 2: The Languages of God
1 Samuel 3:1-10
“Why are you crying, Hannah?... “Why aren’t you eating? Why be downhearted just because you have no children? You have me—isn’t that better than having ten sons?”
1 Samuel 1:8
“Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quiteUncommon.”
1 Samuel 3:1
“Go and lie down again, and if someone calls again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’”
1 Samuel 3:9
1. We recognize His voice through His word.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!”
John 5:39
2. We recognize his voice through creation.
“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Througheverything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”
Romans 1:20
“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.”
Psalm 19:1-4
“If God so precisely and carefully and lovingly and amazingly constructed a mind-boggling habitat for His creatures, then it would be natural for Him to want them to explore it, to measure it, to investigate it, to appreciate it, to be inspired by it--and ultimately, and most importantly, to find Him through it.”
Lee Strobel
3. We recognize his voice through the church.
“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.”
Ephesians 4:11-12
“When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.”

“…we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.”
Acts 15:19
“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these few requirements…”
Acts 15:28
4. We recognize his voice through the circumstances of life.
“My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.”
Psalm 119:71
5. We recognize his voice through the Spirit.
“I slipped out during the night, taking only a few others with me. I had not told anyone about the plans God had put in my heart for Jerusalem. We took no pack animals with us except the donkey I was riding.”
Nehemiah 2:12
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”
John 14:16-17
“But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spiritsearches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.”
1 Corinthians 2:10-12
