Jesus is Undefeated: Part 1 Victory over Temptation

Sermon Series:

Victory Over Temptation
Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13

Mark 1:12-13 “The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness, where he was tempted by Satan
for forty days.”

1. Put your spiritual needs above your physical needs.
Matthew 4:3-4 “During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these
stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by
bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

1 Peter 2:1-3 “So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind
speech. Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full
experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s
kindness.”

2. We must do life God’s way through obedience.
Matthew 4:5-7 “Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the
Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to
protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ”
Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’”

1 Kings 12:4 “Your father was a hard master,” they said. “Lighten the harsh labor demands and heavy
taxes that your father imposed on us. Then we will be your loyal subjects.”

1 Kings 12:7 “If you are willing to be a servant to these people today and give them a favorable answer,
they will always be your loyal subjects.”

1 Kings 12:10-11 “This is what you should tell those complainers who want a lighter burden: ‘My little
finger is thicker than my father’s waist! Yes, my father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make
them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!’”
“If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere good.”

Philippians 2:5-8 “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did
not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took

the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he
humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”

3. Worship the Creator not the creature.
Matthew 4:8-11 “Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the
kingdoms of the world and their glory. “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and
worship me.” “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the
LORD your God and serve only him.’” Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of
Jesus.”

Matthew 16:22-25 “But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.
“Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get
away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point
of view, not from God’s.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you
must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will
lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.”

Hebrews 4:14-16 “So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of
God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he
faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our
gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

Hebrews 2:17-18 “Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers
and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a
sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and
testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.”

1 Peter 2:10-11 “In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So
after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you
on a firm foundation. All power to him forever! Amen.”

Matthew 7:13-14 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is
broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and
the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”
