Victory in the Verdicts
John 18:12 – 19:16

1. Be Submissive to the will of God.
John 18:13-14 “First they took him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest
at that time. Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that one man
should die for the people.”

John 18:20-21 “Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the
Temple, where the people gather. I have not spoken in secret. Why are you asking me this question? Ask
those who heard me. They know what I said.”

John 10:18 Jesus says “No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the
authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has
commanded.”

Romans 8:28-29 “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who
love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he
chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and
sisters.”

2. Avoid foolish arguments.
Mark 14:57-61 “Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony: “We heard him say, ‘I will
destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without
human hands.’ ” But even then they didn’t get their stories straight! Then the high priest stood up before
the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say
for yourself?” But Jesus was silent and made no reply.”

2 Timothy 2:23-24 “Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A
servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with
difficult people.”

Isaiah 50:6 “I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard. I
did not hide my face from mockery and spitting.”

3. Some will see the truth before others do.
Luke 22:66-71 “At daybreak all the elders of the people assembled, including the leading priests and the
teachers of religious law. Jesus was led before this high council, and they said, “Tell us, are you the
Messiah?” But he replied, “If I tell you, you won’t believe me. And if I ask you a question, you won’t
answer. But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of power at God’s right hand.” They
all shouted, “So, are you claiming to be the Son of God?” And he replied, “You say that I am.” “Why do
we need other witnesses?” they said. “We ourselves heard him say it.”

Romans 11:11-12 “Did God’s people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were
disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But he wanted his own people to become
jealous and claim it for themselves. Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel
turned down God’s offer of salvation, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they
finally accept it.”

1 Corinthians 3:6-8 Paul “I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who
made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is
that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the
same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.”

4. Truth always wins.
John 18:33-38 “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him. Jesus replied, “Is this your own question,
or did others tell you about me?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading
priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an
earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish
leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You
say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the
truth recognize that what I say is true.” “What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the
people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime.”

3 John 1:4 “I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth.”

Luke 23:5 “Then they became insistent. “But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes—all
over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!”

5. Silence is sometimes the wisest thing we can do.
Luke 23:8-11 “Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and
had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle. He asked Jesus question after question,
but Jesus refused to answer. Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there
shouting their accusations. Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they
put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.”

Isaiah 53:7 “He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word.”

Proverbs 17:27-28 “A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.
Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.”

6. God holds all the power.
John 19:7-16 “The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son
of God.” When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever. He took Jesus back into the
headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. “Why don’t you
talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?”
Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So
the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish
leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a
king is a rebel against Caesar.” When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate
sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew,
Gabbatha). It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the
people, “Look, here is your king!” “Away with him,” they yelled. “Away with him! Crucify him!” “What?
Crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back. Then
Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified.”

Isaiah 53:10 “But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is
made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the LORD’s good
plan will prosper in his hands.”

1 Corinthians 5:17 “that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a
new life has begun!”
