Sermon Series:
Taking A Hold of True Life
Part 1: Flee. Pursue. Fight
1 Timothy 6:11-16
Not all unity is good, and not all division is bad.
1. Flee ungodly things.
“But you, man of God, flee from all this…”
1 Timothy 6:11(NIV)
Paul says, “If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.”
1 Timothy 6:3-5(NIV)
“Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.”
1 Corinthians 6:18
“Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.”
1 Timothy 6:6-8
“Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.”
Psalm 90:14
2. Pursue a godly life.
“…pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”
1 Timothy 6:11
“May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.”
Phillipians 1:11
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
Galatians 6:9
“Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:13(NIV)
“Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
2 Timothy 2:22(NIV)
3. Fight the good fight of faith.
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge youto keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no-one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might for ever. Amen.”
1 Timothy 6:12-16(NIV)
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.”
2 Timothy 4:7
“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”
James 1:27
“God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no-one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.”
1 Timothy 6:15-16(NIV)
