Hope in the coming King
Jeremiah 23:1-6
1. From sorrow to safety.
Jeremiah 23:1-4 “What sorrow awaits the leaders of my people—the shepherds of my sheep—for
they have destroyed and scattered the very ones they were expected to care for,” says the LORD.
Therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to these shepherds: “Instead of caring for my
flock and leading them to safety, you have deserted them and driven them to destruction. Now I will
pour out judgment on you for the evil you have done to them. But I will gather together the remnant of
my flock from the countries where I have driven them. I will bring them back to their own sheepfold, and
they will be fruitful and increase in number. Then I will appoint responsible shepherds who will care for
them, and they will never be afraid again. Not a single one will be lost or missing. I, the LORD have
spoken!”
- Follow the right shepherd.
1 Peter 2:25 “Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your
Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.”
2. From safety to Savior.
Jeremiah 23:5 “For the time is coming,” says the LORD, “when I will raise up a righteous descendant
from King David’s line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right
throughout the land.”
1 Corinthians 1:30 “God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom
itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.”
- Remain resolute under his reign.
Luke 9:62 “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”
3. From Savior to salvation.
Jeremiah 23:6 “And this will be his name: ‘The LORD Is Our Righteousness.’ In that day Judah
Romans 3:21-24 “But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the
requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. We are
made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no
matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God freely
and graciously declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from
the penalty for our sins.”
- Stop trying to earn righteousness; instead humble yourself under the only one who is
perfectly righteous.
Romans 10:4 “For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result,
all who believe in him are made right with God.”
Romans 5:3-5 “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us
develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our
confident HOPE of salvation. And this HOPE will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God
loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”
